Modeling Tips & Tricks
New Uses for Old Stations The local depot used to be the most important building in any town. As the first thing a visitor saw, having a proper depot was the only way to make a good first impression. Residents put a lot of pressure on railroads, demanding newer and larger buildings that they felt better reflected their communities. But as travelers took to the highways and airports, and the business district moved out by the freeway, many once grand depots feel into disrepair. While a lot were torn down, others were eventually saved, and restored to their former glory. Today, you'll find older stations ready to welcome visitors. Many serve local historical societies, model railroad clubs, chambers of commerce and other civic organizations, small businesses and a few even serve as the local Amtrak station. On a layout, a restored station can be a great salute to the past. We've got plenty of great starting points for these kinds of conversions! The City Station (#933-2904) is based on a prototype at Wausau, Wisconsin, that became the symbol of an insurance company. The N Scale Pella Depot (#933-3818) is based on an Iowa prototype that was restored and is now serving its hometown as a museum. Check out the selection in your current Reference Books and at walthers.com for additional buildings you can use on your layout!
